The SAS participated in the 2003 NAW. During August, when the planet Mars was closest we held 3 special observing meetings at Attinghom Hall and also held two special public speaker meetings.

In Shrewsbury, Professor Mike Edmunds of the University of Wales College of Cardiff, gave a dramatic interpretation of the eventful life of Sir Isaac Newton.

While in Telford, Paul Money gave a talk specifically on Mars including 3D viewing of the Martian landscape.

The meetings and some of the equipment used at the meetings were in part funded by a recent "Awards for All" gift received by the society. We would like to take this opportunity to thank "Awards for All" for looking so favourably upon our application.

One final NAW event was a visit to Jodrell Bank for the BBC "Star Party". Several members went along and ate and drank their way through large chunks of the BBC catering budget. It was a nice night and no one cared about the light pollution from the searchlights because it was cloudy. There is a vicous rumour one of us attempted to cast a shadow rabbit on to the dish but the beams were a bit too hot. The photograph of the illuminated dish was taken by Douglas Renton-Cooper. The other photo was taken by a colleague of Dr Paul Roche.
