Join us!

One of the great advantages of joining our society is that it owns a number of instruments which it loans to the membership. These include a 6" Dobsonian Newtonian reflector. These provide an opportunity for beginners to assess what type of instrument best suits their requirements before spending lots of money. Click here to see some of them and here to borrow them. Also, members are always happy to give advice on telescopes to those preparing to buy for the first time. The Society meets once a month at a dark location for observing, and every 3 months or so at The Gateway Arts+Education Centre (nr the railway and bus station) in Shrewsbury for lectures by guest speakers.
Recently, the publishers Springer-Verlag UK, kindly provided the society with a number of new books. These - and some others - are available for loan to members of the society. Please contact the Chairman for details.
Lecture subjects vary from meeting to meeting, but have covered astrophotography, binocular observing and CCD imaging in the last year or so. Meetings start at 7.15 and always take place on a Friday.
Observing meetings are frequently held at the village hall Rodington - between Telford and Shrewsbury - where the sky is quite dark and kitchen and toilet facilities are available. Meetings start about 8 o'clock and are very informal - please bring a pair of binoculars or a 'scope if you have one. But come anyway even if you do not. Occasionally, members have observing evenings at their own homes.
In addition, there are occasional informal outings to places like Jodrell Bank, Bradford IMAX, Powys Observatory and Liverpool Planetarium. In 2000 a group members travelled to Ireland to see the Armagh Observatory. One special event is the mid-summer barbeque. This is great fun and not to be missed.
Details are available from our Membership Secretary Ron Iremonger on (01743) 356768. Please note: you will need to remove the anti- spam "REMOVETHISBIT." part of the email address before using it.
